This is not something that will be cheap!!! In addition to many, many solar cells, you’ll also need the batteries, etc. http://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/energy-efficiency/question418.htm

The referenced source provides a great link for estimating your solar panel system needs. Be prepared with your current or average electrical usage from your utility bill.
The link will even calculate down to incentives and rebates available for your location.
Some advice if considering going whole house solar is to do an energy audit and see where you might bring down your energy usage. I have included a link that might be interesting to check on this energy saving issue. Less electricity means less solar panel need.
