Solar Turbines: Can I Measure Output Of A Solar Panel By Putting Multimeter Leads Directly To The Cells? (7/27/2011)

in Solar Turbines

I have put about five solar cells together in series and would like to see if the temperature outside affects electricity generated by a solar cell for a project.

Can I connect the multimeter leads directly to the last cell, – to – and + to +?

I was told a resistor is necessary, is this true?

Thanks

You don’t need a resistor, just set your meter to higher than you expect the voltage to be. Try 200 volts d.c. and it will read what is there up to 200, if it’s that high. In the bright sun you might get 20 volts per cell, so 5 cells in series should be good for 100 volts.

2 Volts per cell, 10 Volts total.
