Hi all,
Ok so I went to see The Book of Eli last night and I thought it was a good movie. I just had some questions about some aspects of the movie that I was unclear of. Maybe some of you can shed some light on these inquiries. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE YET YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ ANY FURTHER!!!
Question # 1 – Throughout the movie, especially when Eli was in that little town, people asked to see Eli’s hands to see if he had some kind of marking on them. I was wondering what kind of marking they were looking for and what the marking meant?
Question # 2 – Eli mentioned that there was a war 30 years ago that was most likely started over religion. I was wondering if it was mentioned anymore in text or script or anyone knew what exactly started the war and what exactly caused the destruction of the world?
Question # 3 – Eli mentioned something about a “Big Flash that come fro mtthe sky” which my friend was speculating that it was huge solar flare that caused the destruction but if that’s the case then where does the war come in? So I was thinking that the “Big Flash” may have been a nuclear bomb. Does anyone know what it was?
If anyone had any answers or information they could provide me about the following questions it would be much appreciated and sorry to anyone who has read this and hasn’t seen the movie and may have wanted to :s …I provided a SPOILER ALERT warning.
Thanks again all

Question #1: People were looking at Eli’s hands to see if they were shaky. The old couple in the farmhouse had shaky hands, and Eli explained to Solara that the shakes come from eating human flesh.
Question #2: The script does not mention the cause of the war. However, religion is often blamed for conflict; or used cynically by those who would gain power through its misuse-as was Carnegie’s plan.
Question #3: The “Big Flash” is also not explained. Coupled with the war, I would assume that it was a massive thermonuclear attack which destroyed the ozone layer; but your friend is correct in thinking that a large solar flare would have much the same effect.
Ultimately, the exact identity of the flash is irrelevant to the plot, and I agree with the writer’s decision to not explain it. The plot is better advanced by focusing on the journey, not the cause.
