Watts need for electric motor??
Hey Everyone,

im new to this whole forum thing but i feel it is a great tool and you all are great people to help each other out so i decided to join in.

I am a young entrepreneur developing a product…a solar boat. The boat is ready to go..it has been built, welded and polished. I am only missing one thing, the solar power. This is a little fishing boat so no need for high performance. My question is this.

I am going to be running a 54 lbs thrust Motorguide electric motor, more specifically the Motorguide bulldog 54. According to specifications, the output of the motor is 0.34 kwt.

So the motor will be connected to a deep cycle battery and the solar panels will be connected to the battery also.

This motor should be able to run about 5 hours a day all while recharging and being able to go the next day also. This is what i am aiming for.

What Amount of Solar panel watts will i need? And is a 75 Amp/hour Battery enough?

I was thikning a 75 AH deep cycle battery with 120 Watts worth of solar panels.

When trying to determine the number of solar panels required for a house we need the relative efficiency of the panels, the amount of solar radiation available, which takes us to location and histories. We also need to know the power demand.

We need similar information to provide a more accurate response to your question. Just to tell how long the trolling motor will last with the battery we need a more accurate idea of the usage and the power ratings that should be on a label attached to the motor. These ratings will typically tell us how many amps the motor will draw at what speed.

Then we can get back to the question of how often the motor will be used, the efficiency of the panels and how much sunlight is available.

The first thing you need to do is learn math…

You have a 340 watt motor that you want to run for 5 hours.
This will require 15 batteries.
You will also need at least 250W of solar panels working at peak efficiency for 8 hours.

try dual power sources for regaining electricity, like solar, and then wind

your electric motor is going to over heat, water puts a lot of stress on all engines, and burn out

your batteries will fail, your recharging system will fail

and solar power sail boat? large sail boats use a diesle motor for back up propultian, because they hardly ever fail, thats if they cant run sails, if they can then the motor just aint needed except for genrating power for electronic systems

boats go through a long list of inspections to make sure they are ready to be used, exposed batteries, critical systems that are unportected, that kinda stuff makes them fail there inspection

at beast, you are looking at maybe 5-20 minutes of motor use unless you come up with something 100 percent new

watts=currentxvoltage
750 watts=1 HP
I=3AMPERS
V=12 VOLTS
P=IV=3×12=36 watts.

0.5 ampx6volts=3watts
