Solar panels and associated hardware such as inverters and mounting hardware typically cost out at around $ 6 per watt, which makes them pretty costly and impractical EXCEPT for the subsidies they often times qualify for. In the United States, the feds provide a tax break as do many states and many local power companies will actually provide some sort of subsidy. However, all of this varies by country, state and even what power company you get power from. You have not provided us enough information to give any clearer answer.

Your question on what solar energy costs on a per kilowatt hour basis is unanswerable.

Your question can not have a definitive answer. The initial cost of setting up depends on what you decide to buy in both size and quality then the lifespan of the set up, so you are asking for an answer to a mathematical question with no actual numbers. I guess it is really about your preference and caring about the environment than about money – if we screw up the environment money won’t be worth much will it?
