I know that this may get shot up because we have no money (I understand that) but a lot of our coal plants are old and inefficient. Do you think we should upgrade them (many clean coal technologies actually make the process somewhat more efficient I’ve been told) since coal is still the cheapest power producer out there, or is it too expensive to be worth while and we should either do nothing or try harder with renewable energies like wind and solar?
Thoughts?
No rabidkitty Obama didn’t tell me it’s because a lot of our coal plants are very very old especially on the east coast.

No
No, WE shouldn’t; let the energy companies do it if it makes so much sense (which it doesn’t or they’d already be doing it since that’s the business they’re in and they’re pretty darn good at it (or the far-left wingnuts wouldn’t be screaming at them all the time!)).
If someone wants to do it, why not? I have been under the impression that in a capitalist nation, competition brings out the best product. It is amazing how the left is so open-minded that they won’t even give clean coal a chance.
No such thing as clean coal. Try harder with renewable energy

NO
“a lot of our coal plants are old and inefficient”
how so? because Obama and his czars said so?
ADD ON: any federal legislation forcing businesses and states to spend money they may or may not have is suspect.
The federal government needs to stay the hell out of business, states issues, (10th amendment) and individual issues.
wind and solar wont cut it.
to make the switch now will make power entirely too expensive.
a cleaner source must be found. but in the meantime, clean coal or nuclear should be used to be able to decommission the old, dirty, inefficient plants that were built in the 1930s.
wind and solar will always be used as a supplement to a much more stable power producing process.
I think renewable energies are the way to go. The bottom line is that most of the word’s resources (coal, oil) are NOT infinite. The amount left in the world will continue to decrease while the demand will continue to increase (based on the out-of-hand population growth). Focusing on increasing the efficiency of coal is only a band-aid on the festering wound that is the world’s energy crisis.
wind and solar are the best bets. i don’t think there is actually any such thing as “clean coal”, especially considering the mining process is so harmful to the environment.
and i’m not proposing we put people out of work. just put coal miners to work in factories that make solar panels and windmills. a little bit of training, and we’d solve the job issue at the same time.
I’d rather invest in nuclear, but clean coal is at least more realistic than solar or wind power. I don’t think enough people truly understand the significant problems with solar and wind power. You need something like 800 wind towers to equal the power output of one single coal plant or nuclear plant. And that’s not even taking into account the times when there is no sun or wind. So then you need some form of massive power storage. Talk about environmental impact.
What do you do if it’s night time and there’s no wind?
Natural gas is the key. Cheap, and we have some of the largest supplies in the world. Also, we have the capability to manufacture and retrofit any and all automobiles including big rigs. What the hell is the hold up?
