Solar Energy: Solar Panels, Energy, As A Business!? (11/14/2011)

in Solar Energy

I have got three large plots in Cyprus where there is A LOT of sun, and I’d like to fill it up with solar panels and start selling the energy generated as a business! Is it a good idea? Will it be profitable? If so how would I start? Am I in over my head here? Any advice is highly appreciated!

Thanks!

You have to have a way to deliver the electricity. That being said you would have to contact the power company and work a deal with them which will not be easy.
Other than that you have to buy the panels which could run you $ 5,000.00.
I think you would be better off growing the cypress & selling young ones or use the land for other plants to sell or compost, etc.

It really depends on whether or not the plots are close to power lines and close to a population base that uses the energy. Transmission lines are very costly and waste a lot of energy. If your plots are suitably close to population centers and the transmission lines are there then maybe you can sell the power to the power company at a discounted rate. It wouldn’t be very cost effective as solar panels are still very expensive and the voltage would have to be stepped up to that of the transmission lines. What would be more cost effective would be windmills but even windmills are much more expensive than traditional power generation.
