Solar Lights: Can You Use Solar Powered Batteries In Recharge Battery Appliences? (5/9/2011)

in Solar Lights

I have small indoor solar lights which have a yellow battery, can you use them in a rechargable battery accessory such as a scanner torch or hand held gps.Even though i do relise it wouldn`t last as long. And if you`ve got nothing sensible to say well !! that answers that.

Yes, but they won’t last as long seeing they are not alkaline batteries, but they can accept more charges then other batteries seeing they were designed to do so in solar lighting devices. If they have been used a few years, they may not hold a charge as before unless they are new.

If the item you are putting it into uses the same type of battery- namely if your yellow battery were a NiCad, it can go into a device that was designed for a NiCad.

the same with a NiMH type.

While there is some interchangeability possible, there are too many variables that get too involved for this space.

The good news is neither item will blow up. The bad news if you can call it that, is a NiMH battery will not charge in a solar outdoor light made for NiCads. A Nicad might overcharge and have a shorter life span if put in a solar charger made for a NiMH battery.
