Solar Panel: Can You Charge A Phone With A Small Solar Panel? (5/11/2011)

in Solar Panel

I have a small solar panel that outputs around 3 volts, and it probably doesn’t have much amperage. I was wondering if I could simply hook up the solar panel’s wires to my phone charger’s wires (that plug into the wall) and charge my phone, without any voltage changer or anything. Would this work?

You might be able to use 4 panels in series to produce 12 volts, and then attach an automotive charger to the output of the panels. You have no guarantees that the phone will accept 3 volts, plus you need to manage the charge profile to avoid damaging the battery.
