and it supplies even 25% of the power needed that this decreases our dependence on oil?
For every watt of power generated by alternative energy that is that much less oil or coal that is burned.
I know that this is a difficult concept for a republican to grasp but if they think really hard even they might figure it out.

Because science and math are hard.
Whining is easy.
because right-wingers have a very simple mind.
They don’t see things linked by other actions, they think if its touted as a part of the solution it should fix the problem 100% or it is a failure.
look at the war on poverty…. it has eased the effects of poverty on the impoverished, and reduced poverty by 50% but since it has not cured poverty, it is a failure.
if they applied their same logic to drug wars or the war on terrorism, they would find those to are failures.
also note the comment where they think with solar panels they will have no power at night.
Basically no US electricity comes from foreign oil. ALMOST NONE. as in LESS THAN ONE PERCENT (<1%)
US power plants are:
Hydroelectric (No foreign oil, obviously)
Coal (No foreign oil, obviously)
Natural Gas (Natural gas in the US is 100% domestic)
Nuclear (No foreign oil, obviously)
Solar (No foreign oil, obviously)
Wind (No foreign oil, obviously)
Geothermal (No foreign oil, obviously)
Biofuel (No foreign oil, obviously)
and a little tiny bit of petroleum, SOME of which is foreign based during SOME of the year.

@KURT and AVAIL above me
I’m glad you guys are spouting off on a subject you obviously know nothing about.
GRASP THAT
If it costs $ 10,000 to install and it saves $ 25/month on your power bill then was it worth it?
Yeah, solar panels are only a $ 1/sq foot right?
Most solar panels do not last long enough to recover the original investment.
Yeah, but for every dollar we save for being green, dems want two dollars in taxes.
We have nuclear power where I live
I’m waiting for lunar panels, I don’t need to burn lights during the day, only at night.
lol..you do know that solar panels is what is attracting the radiation that causes global warming…don’t you?…..it absorbs the radiation of the sun and enters it into the atmosphere as energy and it stays here….kinda like keeping the door open on the microwave when you turn it on…….
We get our power from nuclear and hydro-electric where I live in VT. So my putting solar panels on my roof won’t cut my dependence on oil at all.
Thank you for worrying about what I may or may not understand (according to you at least).
Oh, and since I live in North East Vermont, and we get about four to six feet of snow per year. Does that mean that you (or some other liberal, it doesn’t matter to me) is going to come to my house every time it snows to clean off the solar panels?
Why can’t you grasp that Obama’s administration has been trying to find a way to federally fund it and they have tried to hand the contract over to a PREFERRED supplier. While solar is a good option, until we can produce the panels to be cost effective, why force everyone to go broke putting them on their roofs?
I could get an electric car, but then I couldnt go 0-60 in 3 seconds.
Why cant Democrats grasp the concept that not all Republicans think the same way?
Ok here you go. Just because you have “solar panels” or “wind turbines” that doesn’t mean you’re saving the world. Since you can’t depend on solar and wind energy that means that coal power plants have to burn the same amount of coal just in case the wind stops or there’s not enough sunlight. So you can buy a million dollars of solar panels but in the end they still have to pump the same amount of energy into the grid, meaning the same amount of coal is burned.
When will you grasp that we want efficient alternative energy, not to spend thousands to save hundreds.
when reagen took then off white house.
100 square miles of hydro solar would do it
and add in following
no coal mines
no co2
no coal ash
no Mercury
it almost free
and sun goes out i think we will have bigger problems then how to run are ac
Last year the first commercial solar plant with heat storage opened near Guadix, Spain, east of Granada. During the day, sunlight from a mirror field is used to heat molten salt. In the evening, as the salt cools, it gives back heat to make more steam. In Arizona the Solana Generating Station will also use molten salt for storage. When it goes on line in 2012, three square miles of parabolic troughs will produce 280 megawatts for Phoenix and Tucson. Solana is being built by a Spanish company, Abengoa Solar—an indication of just how far, in the development of this technology, the United States has fallen behind.
Back in the 1980s, an engineer named Roland Hulstrom calculated that if photovoltaic panels—the other big solar technology—covered just three-tenths of a percent of the United States, a 100-by-100-mile square, they could electrify the entire country.

because oil isn’t used to produce electricity
Generally speaking it is not economically worth it to put up solar panels. Generalizing all republicans is not fair. A lot of people are invested in or have bi product jobs from oil. Your idea is correct, and I would love to see solar everywhere, but the pay back is not there. Until it pays, you won’t see many people doing it…
because it does not. People forget the cost of the batteries to make it all work.
add it all up and you have a negative return
cost to make, service and dispose of the batteries
So how does putting solar panels on my house create plastics….natural gas….or run the tractors, trucks and trains that bring food to your table?
Why can’t Democrats grasp the fact that building, moving and installing a solar panel USES more energy than it will yield in its service lifetime; that as of yet, ALL “alternative energy” does the same?
Because they get their talking points from big oil.
most of our need for oil is on fueling generators, the our engines, and for making plastics. little if any oil is actually used for power plants.
also the cost for solar panels is very high compared to the amount you actually save on your electric bill. so unless you plan on staying in the house for a long time getting solar panels isn’t very cost effective. not to mention the fact that most people don’t have a few thousand dollars just sitting around to do that.
In Australia, we have government incentives to install alternative energy sources in our homes. The electricity we generate is fed back into the grid and bought off us by the electricity company and deducted from our electricity bills.
There are also government incentives for such things as solar hot water systems
i understand it just fine. I also understand that the resulting power costs more than what power from the electric company costs, AND that the installation costs $ 60,000 or so which the homeowner has to borrow, lasts about 20 years, increases your insurance bill, and you make payments on the 60k on top of that. [which, btw, you don't get 100% of back when you resell the house.]
I had solar hot water in AZ. The collector lasts less than 15 years and costs $ 1200 to replace. The tank lasts about 30 years and costs about $ 600 more than a gas water heater. Figure it out — the interest and depreciation on the added gear amounts to about $ 200 a year in added costs — it doesn’t save that much so you lose money. {btw, your homeowner’s insurance excludes the solar hot water gear, so you’re running naked on the risk of hail destroying the $ 1200 collector.}
you and your silly ideas of cumulative effect from modest inputs, as all republicans know, if it isn’t big, it doesn’t count.
What liberals can’t seem to grasp is reality. You are lied to about the true cost and effect. You are like little children who love everything that sounds good. Pie in the sky cotton candy clouds. I’m conservative and am I smarter than a fifth grader? Hell yeah!!!
Why should only Republicans “grasp that concept”? If people
need to use solar panels, shouldn’t that include everyone
despite their political persuasion? We all still have choices
in America, whether it be solar panels or paying through
the teeth for other alternatives.
