Solar Products: What Does Cause Aurora Borealis And Northern Lights? Solar Flare Or Solar Wind? (4/8/2012)

in Solar Products

I read two articles, one about Solar Flare and the other about Solar Flare, they both mentioned aurora borealis, so which one really makes the aurora borealis? I’m confused … Solar Flare doesn’t happen alot but Solar Wind is there all the time.

Solar flares are what cause the northern lights, yes it is not there all the time like the solar wind, but the northern lights are not out all the time, just when there is solar activity.

Neither. Solar flares (which happen all the time, just not continuously) sometimes trigger coronal mass ejections, which sometimes are carried on the solar wind to Earth, where they cause aurora. So solar flares are the ultimate triggers of aurora, and the solar wind is the medium by which they are transmitted to Earth.

solar wind is nothing but highly charged particles. When these particles enter the earth’s atmosphere
they fall from their high energy state to a low energy state. When they fall they produce light which is visible to us in the form of streaks of light.
