“In the early 20th century the problem of production had been solved; after that it was the problem of consumption that plagued society. In the 1050′s and ’60′s, consumer commodities and farm products began to pile up in vast towering mountains all over the Western World. As much as possible was given away– but that threatened to subvert the open market. By 1980, the pro tem solution was to heap up the products and burn them: billions of dollars worth, week after week.
Each Saturday, townspeople had collected in sullen, resentful crowds to watch the troops squirt gasoline on the cars and toasters and clothes and oranges and coffee and cigarettes that nobody could buy, igniting them in a blinding conflagration. In each town there was a burning-place, fenced off, a kind of rubbish and ash heap, where the fine things that could not be purchased were systematically destroyed.” “Solar Lottery” by Philip K. idk, but I think the world will become a socialistic society…
.
the population is simply out of control…
i think it already has. here are 3 of the most popular rappers today singing the song entitled “Money to Blow” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLAA5IRbZZI
and heres another singing “Money to Burn” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkNUzKCWkYs
These are the role models of todays youth. i understand that viewed as entertainment its fine…and dont get me wrong i listen to rap for entertainment….but the problem is that lots and lots of kids actually look at these men as people they want to be like.
I think what is happening now is that the ultra rich actually flaunt over consumption and waste as a symbol of status. as opposed to giving the extras in life the elite actually take pride in having possessions to burn and money to blow.
No, because with no buyers, nobody would make the products. = No “Effective Demand”.
Consumerism is dead anyway, since we’ve all learned our lesson. Gee, that was easy; a 30 year heroin (er, credit) addiction cured in 2 years with only 30 million permanently unemployed. What? It could be worse? You’ll see way worse, but first we need a little recovery to get people spending again which ignites the inflation which makes balance sheets look good, giving confidence which allows people to spend more which fuels hyperinflation. Then add in 10 years of the Carbon Credit Casino Bubble, in which zillions of new dollars (renamed “quatloos”) are created and wagered by the big brains. When all that crashes, as bubbles always will, we’ll have such a reduced population we can start over on a more sound basis than buying plastic crap with borrowed fake money.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
