Well, lots. They convert only about 20% of the sun’s energy to electricity, the rest gets wasted.
What kind? some is in heat. Some of the sun’s radiation is reflected off. And there are losses in the wires (heat) in the battery (heat) and in the charge controller (heat) and in the inverter (heat).
About 75% to 100% of the available sunlight is wasted before it gets to the collector, depending partly on the weather and partly on time of day. A variable amount is wasted because of dust on the collector. Some is wasted because of a poor angle of incidence, depending on design and time of day. Some power is lost in conversion to electricity, and some is wasted because the electric power has to be converted, regulated, and stored in a battery.
How about a nice clothesline? 100% efficient!
