Only about 1% of the full annual energy-usage of the United States. However… annual energy use is slightly over 100 quadrillion BTU (15 trailing zeros), which means that solar energy accounts for 293 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) every single year. Each household uses about 920 kWh per month, so you do a little math, and that means that (as an average number), that 1% of our country’s energy use could power about 26.5 million homes. But, as a final “however,” about 30% of the solar energy goes to industry, so the “house count” is really closer to 18.5 million homes.
That ain’t bad. We can do much better, but you have to star somewhere, right?
