You’ve got to put some thought into these. If you find you are getting stuck, examine each answer.
1. How long does it take for fossil fuels to be formed? Hundreds of millions of years. They were formed by processes that no longer exist. We’re using them at a prodigious rate, on the order of less than thousands of years. Does that sound renewable?
2. a. Nuclear fuel, once used up, is done. Nuclear fuel is created in supernova explosions and must be already in the mix when our solar system was formed for us to get at it. Does that sound renewable?
b. Does the wind run out because you put up a windmill, or does it keep blowing?
c. Does the water cycle from ocean evaporation to rainfall stop because we put in a dam? Keep in mind that a dam does not slow down the water flow. It only concentrates the fall in one place so it is concentrated.
d. Does the sun stop shining, or is more of the sun’s fuel used up because you put up some solar panels?
3. a. Does a solar cell give off anything but electricity when it is converting sunlight into electricity?
b. Does a car put out carbon dioxide? Does burning fuel in general put out carbon dioxide?
c. Does water flowing through a turbine give off carbon dioxide?
d. Does a nuclear power plant give off anything other than nuclear waste?
4. Hydro is Latin for water. Hydroelectric is water-electric, power from water.
I’ll leave it to you to select the proper answers. I hope this helps you with future homework questions.
