The solar panels that are on houses and buildings ect. use photovoltaic cells witch uses the suns radiation witch turn it into a DC (Direct Current) current this dc current can be stored in a battery cell nearly all battery cells use DC where as the energy that you get from the grid uses AC (Alternating Current)
The energy is stored untill you wish to use it and you can even sell it back to the mains line if you are not using it.

You also get a diffrent type of solar panel this type of panel has a liquid that flows through it and is heated up by the same photovoltaic cells but is ran through the water tank to keep the water warm
