Solar Panel: Will A Solar Powered Lightbulb Power Itself? (7/5/2012)

in Solar Panel

Okay, so I have this question.
You have a lightbulb connected to a solar panel. The lightbulb is powered until its night, if you put the already on lightbulb by the panel, will it power itself throughout the night?

the solar pannel saves energy throughout the day so that at night it will still work… i think

Normal solar powered light bulbs save up the energy during the day and automatically use the energy to light itself up

Nice idea, but it violates the laws of physics. It might return a very tiny fraction of its energy to the solar panel, but the light is likely a lot less intense than sunlight, and isn’t just focused on the solar panel. In fact, the light from the bulb might not be bright enough to return any energy to the system at all. At best, your light bulb might stay lit a fraction of a second longer than it would otherwise. Also, energy is lost from various parts of the system along the way.

nope, no energy must be lost in your system for it to work.

even if you had the solar cells wrapped around the bulb you would still loose energy in the form of heat as the electrons squeeze through the wire

With out photons hitting the panel, no power is generated. That’s why most systems store the energy made during the day in a battery, and then use the stored power at night. The next day the batteries recharge.
