Solar Turbines: The Solar Light, Cells Are A Source Of Chemical Energy Or Electrical Energy? (8/8/2012)

in Solar Turbines

hi
The solar lights contain cells which charge up during the day.
The cells are a source of

electrical energy
or
chemical energy?

The cells are semiconductors that absorb the energy from light (photons) and release the energy in electrons. The solar cells produce electrical energy as output. But the release mechanism is really a chemical energy process since it involves the outer electrons and in the energy conversion process the atomic structure of the semiconductor is not altered. So, if your question is, “What kind of energy do solar cells produce?” the answer is electrical energy. If your question is, “What type of energy conversion process is responsible for the output of a solar cell?” – I’d say, chemical.

Electrical. Due to light having momentum the photo-electric effect is utilized to knock lose an electron. When you have a lot of photons striking the solar panel then you get a large net current.
