SETTLEMENT PRICE: The price paid by the utility or public network to the owner/operator of the generating source (in this case, a wind turbine).
In the 1990′s, the settlement price was a fixed value; approximately 85 percent of the value that consumers were paying – after taxes and an administrative fee were paid off. This means that for every dollar the consumer paid for power, the tax-plus-administration of 20 cents was taken out, and then the utility gathered 12 cents (to cover the costs of transmission and paperwork), and the wind turbine gathered 68 cents (for the operation and maintenance of the turbine).
In the new century, this pricing structure has changed somewhat, depending on where (and when) the wind turbine was installed. In some places it is still a “pro rata” method similar to what’s outlined above. In others, it is a straight percentage of what the going market rate is for electricity.
The actual calculations are dependent on both the “start date” for the turbine, and the local rating system and consumer charges used by the local utility.
