1. Solar energy can be converted to electricity in two ways:
Photovoltaic (PV devices) or “solar cells” and Concentrating Solar Power Plants

2. California has the world’s biggest solar power plant.

3. Some advantages of photovoltaic systems are:

Conversion from sunlight to electricity is direct, so that bulky mechanical generator systems are unnecessary.
PV arrays can be installed quickly and in any size.
The environmental impact is minimal, requiring no water for system cooling and generating no by-products.

Gaby: The facts are all there on the websites provided. A little reading will produce both positives and negatives. I’ve found that providing too much information in a response will overwhelm some readers. Thanks.

PJ is right, but left out the negatives associated with Solar when compared to Nuclear and Conventional energy production.

1. Solar requires much more of a footprint (area of our earth) for the same amount of power.
2. Solar is not reliable. The sun does not always shine. We must have 24/7 power.
3. Solar is much more expensive than conventional and nuclear power.

Solar energy is an alternative energy source that involves harnessing the radiant light energy emitted by the sun and converting it into electrical current. Since the middle of the 20th century, the ability to harness and utilize solar energy has greatly increased, making it possible for homes and businesses to make use of the renewal energy source rather than rely on more conventional means of generating power. Research into the applications of solar energy continue, along with the development of more cost-effective ways to capture and store the energy for future use. Solar energy is all the rage these days. With the current concerns about global warming and energy rates going up every day, it’s no wonder people are looking for alternative ways to power their lives. Solar power is one of the most efficient and affordable energy alternatives available today.
